AGU creates special group to defend indigenous peoples

In the wake of actions to protect the Yanomami in Roraima, the Attorney General’s Office (AGU) created a special group to defend indigenous peoples.

The measure, signed by the head of the portfolio, Jorge Messias, was published in the Official Gazette (DOU) this Tuesday (7).

Through the text, the group intends to “articulate and standardize legal strategies in the advisory and judicial activity in the respective agenda”. The actions will be focused mainly on legal proceedings.

One of them was opened in 2020 and proposed by the Articulação dos Povos Indígenas (Apib) and political parties (PSB, PSOL, PCdoB, Rede, PT and PDT) investigates the actions and omissions of the management of former president Jair Bolsonaro in the fight against Covid -19 on indigenous lands.

The lawsuit is pending at the Federal Supreme Court (STF). Another process is analyzed in the 4th Federal Court of Roraima, and focuses on illegal mining in the Yanomami Indigenous Land.

The act describes that the group will have representatives of the Federal Attorney General’s Office; Union Attorney General; the National Attorney for the Defense of the Climate and the Environment; General Secretariat for Litigation; the legal consultancy of the Ministries of Indigenous Peoples, Environment and Health; and specialized federal prosecutors of Ibama and the National Mining Agency (ANM).

The action comes in the wake of other federal government measures to contain the humanitarian crisis in Roraima, which is plaguing the region’s indigenous population.

Since the weekend, groups of prospectors have been leaving the state, and images show people fleeing by boat, as the airspace is under inspection by the Air Force after the outbreak of Operation Shield.

According to the Minister of Justice, Flávio Dino, the government estimates that 15,000 illegal miners are in the territory, but is working to ensure that they leave spontaneously to avoid clashes.

This week, the folder will put into practice the 2nd phase of actions in the region, with the dispatch of agents from the National Force, Federal Police and Armed Forces.
