The government of President Jair Bolsonaro, through the Attorney General of the Union (AGU) and the Civil House, sent this Thursday (9) to the Federal Supreme Court (STF) documents in which it denies having failed to adopt the necessary measures to combat the Ômicron variant of Covid-19 in the country.
The document was sent to Minister Luís Roberto Barroso’s office as part of the process presented by Rede Sustentabilidade to demand that the government adopt the so-called “vaccine passport”. The party accuses the federal administration of having failed to fight the disease for not reviewing restrictions on international arrivals, as recommended by the National Health Surveillance Agency (Anvisa).
On Monday (6), Barroso gave the government of President Jair Bolsonaro 48 hours to explain why it has not required anyone arriving in the country to provide proof of vaccination against Covid-19 or the obligation to comply with quarantine.
The AGU and the Civil House expressed themselves this Thursday on the Network’s statements and asked for the rejection of the action due to lack of evidence of the omission. The Federal Attorney General’s Office also argued that the interministerial ordinance issued yesterday,8 to regulate the matter was adopted “already after the constitution of facts and technical considerations relating to the new strain of Covid-19 (Ômicron)”.
“There was no omission by the Federal Executive Branch in reviewing the restrictions, measures and exceptional and temporary requirements for entry into the country, due to the risks of contamination and dissemination of the SARS-CoV-2 (Covid-19) coronavirus”, declared the AGU.
The Ministry of Justice, Health and Infrastructure should also provide clarifications to the Supreme Court for signing the most recent joint ordinance with “exceptional and temporary measures” imposed on passengers on international flights.
Today, Bolsonaro published a new ordinance with rules to require air and land travelers arriving in Brazil to present proof of vaccination, printed or electronic, from Saturday 11. If they have not been vaccinated, it is necessary to comply with quarantine of five days at the destination.
“We emphasize the importance of strict adoption of prevention and control measures, as a follow-up to the national vaccination campaign against covid-19, according to guidelines from the Ministry of Health, as well as non-pharmacological ones: physical distance, respiratory etiquette, hand hygiene, use of masks, cleaning and disinfection of environments, in order to prevent the spread of the virus in the country”, said the AGU to the Supreme Court.
