Elections in Syria could take up to four years, the country’s de facto leader Ahmed al-Sara said in an interview with the Al Arabiya network, hinting at a possible election timetable for the first time since the fall of Bashar al-Assad. Drafting a new constitution is likely to take up to three years, said Ahmed al-Sara, the leader of the radical Islamist Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) group that heads the coalition that ousted Assad on December 8. As for the US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) and a key component of which are the Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG), Sara said they should join the future Syrian army. “Guns should be exclusively in the hands of the state.
