One tool powered by artificial intelligence it achieves detect high blood pressure and diabetes in patients through video analysis without the need for physical contact, blood pressure cuffs or blood tests, according to a new study.
THE article which describes how the system works in patients at a hospital in Japan is considered preliminary, as it has not yet been published in a peer-approved journal, but the results will be presented this week at an American Heart Association event in the USA.
AI has proven capable of detecting diseases through changes in blood flow in the skin of the face or hands, as both high blood pressure and diabetes cause damage to blood vessels, subtly altering the way blood passes through them.
According to Ryoko Uchida, the study’s lead researcher at the University of Tokyo’s department of advanced cardiology, the tool would allow patients to monitor their health “in the comfort of their own homes without having to undergo any tests.”
In the study, the algorithm was 94% accurate in detecting stage 1 hypertension and 75% accurate in diagnosing diabetes.
The researchers highlight, however, that the tool would still need to be tested in other populations and in different lighting or location conditions so that it can become viable on a large scale.
