Private aviation, despite having a higher incidence of accidents compared to commercial aviation, is still considered extremely safe, according to pilot and retired colonel Ênio Beal Júnior. The analysis was carried out after the plane crash involving a helicopter in Caieiras, Greater São Paulo, which resulted in the death of two people last Thursday night (16).
The expert explained that, although there are a greater number of incidents in private aviation, it is important to contextualize this data.
“If we consider that in recent years passenger transport has exceeded the world’s population, you have more than 9.5 billion passengers transported every year, the number of accidents is small”, he stated.
Differences between commercial and private aviation
The colonel highlighted the differences between the different sectors of aviation. While commercial aviation is more regulated and operates at airports with better infrastructure, private aviation often serves locations without regular commercial services, which can increase the risk of incidents.
“Commercial aviation is more regulated. Furthermore, it goes to airports that have a larger, more prepared infrastructure and the pilots go to the same locations every day”, explained the expert, contrasting with the reality of private aviation.
Comparative Statistics
Beal Júnior presented statistics that illustrate the difference in security between sectors. In commercial aviation, approximately one accident occurs every 830,000 takeoffs. In private aviation, this proportion drops to one accident for every 100,000 operations.
“It is still, let’s say, a small incidence, but we see that there is a large margin for private aviation to learn, for example, from commercial aviation and make its operation increasingly safer”, concluded the colonel , emphasizing the need for continuous improvement in private aviation security protocols.
