Air conditioners, from May 1st the rules for the summer come into force

The Government’s goal is to save 4 billion cubic meters of gas over 2022. And, to do so, it is necessary to cut the consumption of air conditioners and radiators.

Mario Draghi had already announced this in the press conference on April 6, when he asked the Italians: “Do we prefer peace or be quiet with the radiator on or with the air conditioning on for the whole summer?”.

And now the new package of rules on air conditioners is ready: the rules will come into force from 1 May 2022 and will remain so until March 31, 2023, and will be valid only for public offices and schools (the air conditioners are not found in the classrooms, but only in the administrative offices).

The weighted average of temperatures it must not exceed 19 degrees in winter (today it can be up to 20) nor drop below 27 degrees in summer. However, there is one tolerance of two degrees. The provision does not apply to clinics, hospitals and nursing homes. According to Angela Masi, M5S, promoter of the amendment, “this is an easy way to help reduce the need for gas. It is right that the Public Administration sets a good example, cutting waste and making citizens aware of rationalizing consumption ». On the other hand, 57% of the annual energy consumption of public offices concerns air conditioning.

For those who do not abide by the rules, they are provided penalties from 500 to 3 thousand euros. However, it remains to be determined who will have to check compliance with the parameters: for now it seems a very complicated task, but the details will be published in the Official Gazette.

For now, the institutions and the National Consumers Union are limited to providing private advice. The first is that of lower temperatures by one degree at home, a device that would allow a gas saving between 5 and 10% depending on the climatic zone and, obviously, on the thermal insulation of the house.
