Air crash in South Korea is the worst since 1997

The Jeju plane crash in South Korea this Sunday (29) is the worst air disaster to hit the country since 1997, when a Korean Airlines flight crashed in the jungle of Guam, killing 228 people.

There have been several cases since 1997, but few have involved reported fatalities.

According to the Aviation Safety Network, there have been no other accidents involving fatalities on passenger flights in South Korea since April 2002.

In the April 2002 accident, an Air China Boeing 767-2J6ER crashed into a mountain while trying to land in Gimhae, South Gyeongsang Province, according to an accident report published by the Korea Aviation–Accident Investigation Board.

Of the 166 people on board, 129 of them, including two co-pilots, died, the document states.

Worst plane crash in decades

Among the 181 people on board, at least 179 died in a plane crash in South Korea this Sunday (29), according to local fire and rescue authorities.

Two people survived, both crew members. This is the country’s worst air disaster in decades.

The Jeju Air plane was carrying 175 passengers and six crew members when it crash-landed at Muan County Airport. With the exception of two Thai citizens, everyone on board was South Korean.
