Amid growing tension in the Middle East, the evacuation of Brazilians and foreigners from Lebanon has become an urgent concern.
According to professor Augusto Teixeira, a specialist in International Relations at the Federal University of Paraíba (UFPB), air travel emerges as the safest option for leaving the country.
In an interview with CNN 360° Teixeira explained: “The safest route, oddly enough, is by air.”
The expert highlighted the importance of keeping airports functioning and ensuring effective airspace coordination to avoid incidents and collateral damage to civil aviation.
Risks of alternative routes
The professor highlighted the dangers associated with land and sea routes. Syria, a country neighboring Lebanon, is still facing the effects of a prolonged civil war, posing significant risks for refugees and displaced people.
“If we look at Syria, it is a country in civil war that, despite being calmer at the moment, still exhibits high levels of insecurity,” warned Teixeira.
As for the maritime option, the situation is equally complex. The professor recalled the destruction of the port of Lebanon, which occurred a few years ago, which made this escape route unfeasible.
“The maritime environment is in a very complicated situation, including the port of Lebanon destroyed, due to an explosion that occurred a few years ago,” he explained.
Importance of international dialogue
Teixeira emphasized the crucial need for a political-diplomatic debate on airport security. This dialogue is not limited to Brazil alone, but involves other Western countries with populations in Lebanon that require evacuation.
“That is why the political-diplomatic debate on airport security is fundamental, not only for Brazil, but also for other Western countries that have their populations in Lebanon and need to evacuate”, concluded the expert, underlining the importance of international cooperation at this critical moment.
