Air tragedy in Nepal: Experts “see” a complete loss of power in the engines

The plane that crashed last month in Nepalkilling 72 people, experienced a complete loss of engine power during the final phase of the landing procedure, the committee of experts appointed by the government to investigate the causes of the air tragedy announced today.

Analysis of the aircraft’s so-called black boxes, cockpit conversations and flight data showed that the propellers on the ATR 72’s two engines had been shut down, the panel’s finding said.

The Yeti Airlines plane crashed on January 15, shortly before landing in Pokhara, Nepal’s second largest city. It was the worst air tragedy in this Asian country since 1992.

A total of 72 people were on board the twin-engine ATR 72: 68 passengers (including two children) and a crew of four.

71 bodies were found at the scene of the tragedy. The search and rescue operation has been completed, since the authorities consider that there is no possibility that anyone survived the crash of the aircraft.
