Short-term real estate firm Airbnb announced late yesterday that it had suspended operations in Russia and Belarus.
Customers around the world will not be able to make new bookings for accommodation in Russia or Belarus, the company said in a statement. “Customers in Russia or Belarus will no longer be able to make new bookings on Airbnb.”
The company said bookings from April 4 onwards had been canceled.
Airbnb CEO Brian Cesky announced the planned suspension of operations via Twitter on March 4.
The company had already spoken of the difficulty of conducting transactions related to specific financial institutions in Russia and Belarus due to Western sanctions imposed after Moscow sent tens of thousands of troops to Ukraine on February 24.
