Thousands of users of the Airbnb apartment rental platform have booked apartments in Ukraine, not to spend a few days there, but to financially support Ukrainian landlords. In just two days, nearly $ 2,000,000 was paid last week for more than 61,000 overnight stays in Ukraine, a spokesman for the San Francisco-based US company told AFP on Tuesday.
After booking and prepaid the apartments on the Airbnb platform, some users posted on the Internet the answers of Ukrainian owners, who thanked their “customers” for the financial, but above all the moral support.
They want to help the Ukrainians as much as they can
Megan Bamford from Edmonton, Canada, one of the users of the American platform, told the French news agency that she and her husband closed apartments in the besieged cities of Kyiv and Kharkov: “I feel bad that I enjoy the security here at home and “Five years ago, if someone told me that the Airbnb website would become a useful means of communication in time of war, I would tell him he was crazy.”
The Canadian stresses to AFP that she uses Airbnb to help Ukrainians in their homeland as much as possible. She hopes that with this money her “hosts” might be able to leave their cities. At the same time, however, Megan Bamford says that she also gives money to aid organizations.
Airbnb supports the user initiative
It should be noted that the Airbnb platform did not have the initiative to support the Ukrainians in Ukraine, but supports it from the outset. In a Twitter post, the head of the American company Brian Cesky posted messages from users who helped financially by booking Ukrainian landlords.
At the same time, Airbnb announced last week that it offers up to 100,000 people, who were forced to flee their homes due to the Russian invasion, free overnight stays for free. At the same time, the American platform announced that it was ceasing its activities in Russia and Belarus.
Around 28,000 Airbnb landlords worldwide are offering their apartments to refugees, while more than $ 1.2 million has been channeled to various aid organizations, a spokesman for the platform told the French news agency.
