Airbnb will host 20,000 Afghan refugees

Twenty thousand Afghan refugees will be welcomed in temporary accommodation made available free of charge by Airbnb: the global travel platform has just announced, explaining that it will offer hospitality through Airbnb.org, the independent non-profit organization that has been supporting people in need for years. The initiative will be funded by Airbnb itself, by its founder Brian Chesky, as well as by donors of a special fund for refugees and is already active thanks to the collaboration with partners and resettlement agencies to place those in need in every part of the world as needed.

“Tens of thousands of Afghan refugees are moving around the world, and the where they stay will be the first chapter of their new lives“, he said Brian Chesky, CEO and co-founder of Airbnb. “For these 20,000 refugees, my hope is that the Airbnb community will offer not only a safe place to rest and start over, but also a warm welcome home.”

It is not the first time that Airbnb has done its part: it has welcomed displaced during natural disasters, health workers in the midst of the pandemic, with Airbnb.org in the last 4 years has put in contact about 25,000 refugees. Also, earlier this year, again with Airbnb.org, Airbnb announced the creation of the $ 25 million Refugee Fund, to further expand support for refugees and asylum seekers around the world. Regarding the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan, the platform has also provided emergency funding and support toInternational Rescue Committee (IRC), HIAS and Church World Service to provide immediate temporary stays for more than a thousand refugees arriving in the US. “Affordable housing is an urgently needed and essential need,” said David Miliband, President and CEO of the International Rescue Committee. “We are grateful to our partners at Airbnb.org and Airbnb for once again offering their support and infrastructure to cope with this moment, providing safe and welcoming places for people and families arriving in the United States to get started. to rebuild their lives ”.

Now we need the support of all of us: Airbnb urges members of the global business community to join efforts to provide immediate support to Afghan refugees but also ordinary citizens, if we have space available, or if we can donate even a small amount to the cause: the info is on it.airbnb.org (at the bottom of the page), and on www.airbnb.it.
