Airbus this Monday (11) raised the estimate of aircraft deliveries over the next 20 years. The company estimates total deliveries of 39,490 jets over the next 20 years, up from the 39,020 previously expected.
The increase is partly due to 2021’s departure from the period encompassed by the 20-year projection, as last year was exceptionally weak because of the pandemic.
The company expects deliveries to include 38,600 passenger aircraft, up from 38,140 previously, and 890 freighters, out of 880.
However, the company sees passenger traffic growing more slowly than before, at 3.6% a year, instead of the 3.9% projected in November.
The company has maintained its expectation that air traffic will recover to pre-pandemic levels sometime between 2023 and 2025, as the sector faces pressures ranging from inflation to increases in energy prices, as well as the risk of further outbreaks related to variants of Covid-19.
However, the planemaker has modified its best and worst case scenarios for traffic, and now sees a recovery to 2019 levels about six months later than its previous projection, according to graphs provided with the data.
