AIRC: Oranges of Health are back in the streets for cancer research

An orange to write the word “end” to the nightmare called cancer? Yes it can be done. Saturday 29 January – a few days before the World Cancer Day, which falls on February 4th – return to the squares Health oranges with the first fundraising event of the year AIRC Foundation.

Twenty thousand volunteers in all the squares of Italy will distribute 2.5 kg nets of blood oranges grown in Italy for a donation of 10 euros. To fill up on additional health, they are also available orange marmalade in a 240 gr jar (6 euros) e millefiori honey in a 500 g jar (7 euros). Together with the products, a special guide will be offered with healthy and tasty orange-based recipes, signed by Chef in Shirt, GNAMBOX and Singerfood, and an in-depth study on the vegetarian diet.

Why the blood oranges? Symbol of healthy nutrition, they contain the anthocyanins, natural pigments with exceptional antioxidant powers, and about 40% more vitamin C than other citrus fruits.

And then they help convey the important message of how much one balanced diet can do for our health: the food we consume, in fact, can greatly affect our well-being and also be a precious ally if, in addition to eating in a healthy and balanced way, we reduce risk factors such as sedentary lifestyle and theobesity. A diet rich in whole grains, vegetables, fruits and legumes helps reduce the risk of developing various types of cancer. As the World Cancer Research Fund recommends, it is important to limit animal fats (except fish) and simple sugars.

In this regard, focus on sugars: we already know that tumors are highly dependent on it. Based on this knowledge the progetto “Breakfast”, supported by AIRC and coordinated by Professor Claudio Vernieri at IFOM and the National Cancer Institute of Milan. In fact, researchers use, in association with chemotherapy for the treatment of triple negative breast cancer, a hypoglycemic diet cyclical to reduce the amount of glucose in the body: it is a kind of innovative adjuvant therapy. Limiting the consumption of sugars also contributes to primary prevention because about a third of cancers could be avoided with a varied and balanced diet.

“Other clinical studies are underway such as ‘Breakfast’ – underlines Vernieri – from which in the future we expect valuable information on the effectiveness of reducing blood glucose levels, not only in terms of cancer prevention, an aspect already recognized by the international scientific community. , but also as a therapy in addition to traditional treatments, such as chemotherapy and immunotherapy ».

But everything always starts from prevention: «It is fundamental – explains the professor Luigi Ricciardiello, associate professor of Gastroenterology at the University of Bologna and gastroenterologist at the Policlinico Sant’Orsola-Malpighi of Bologna – This requires that the quality and quantity of the food eaten be associated withphysical exercise – which affects inflammatory mechanisms and the immune system – and the give up smoking, the major risk factor responsible for approximately 90% of lung cancers and many other types of cancer and diseases ».

And he adds: «I am the owner of a study funded by Airc on some molecules associated with the Mediterranean diet, such as Omega 3 and the catechine, which it seems that if associated with the colorectal cancer therapies, can assist the effectiveness of treatments or even slow down the growth of cancer cells. Not only that, we are noticing after nearly three years, like the intestinal microbiota is an environment that can affect the proliferation of these cells.

Halfway through the process I already feel like saying, as numerous studies already approved by the scientific community already demonstrate, that the Mediterranean diet it is an excellent ally in the fight against cancer, but it must not be a one-off whim, but a real lifestyle ».
