Airline launches lottery for those who buy the middle seat

Offering no window view or easy access to the bathroom, the middle seat is arguably the least desirable place to sit on a flight. In fact, just 0.6% of over 7,500 respondents prefer – or, perhaps more likely, accidentally voted for – the middle seat, according to a recent Virgin Australia social media poll.

That number could soon rise if the airline’s scheme to get passengers to voluntarily reserve the dreaded middle seat is a success.

Virgin Australia has just launched the Middle Seat Lottery, a special draw worth around R$770,000. It is only open to those who sit in the middle seat – voluntarily or involuntarily – during a flight.

“Virgin Australia is an airline that is doing things differently and we are having a lot of fun with exciting innovations to make every part of the travel experience more wonderful,” says Jayne Hrdlicka, CEO of Virgin Australia Group, in a press release. press.

“We are now giving our loyal customers the opportunity to win a prize pool valued at over $230,000 by simply sitting in a middle seat”

Rewards include free flights, helicopter ride and bungee jump

From now until April 23, 2023, any Velocity Frequent Flyer member aged 18 and over who is seated in a middle seat can use the airline app to enter the lottery.

Each week, a different prize will be awarded to the winner of a sweepstakes. Among the innovative gifts up for grabs are a full-day helicopter tour (including flights back to Darwin) and a two-night Cairns holiday, including flights, accommodation and a bungee jump.

For Australian Football League fans, there are flights and tickets to the Australian Football League Grand Final, plus exclusive access to pre-match and after-party lunch.

Travelers can also earn Virgin’s “Platinum Velocity” frequent flyer status for a year – along with a million extra speed points – as well as some refurbished themed gallery carts.

After the announcement was posted on the airline’s social media channels on October 24, some commentators agreed it was a “brilliant plan”, while others said nothing could get them to sit in the middle seat.
