Airplane turbine disintegrates and causes cancellation of 16 flights in Congonhas

The turbine of an airplane disintegrated this Saturday morning (26) at Congonhas airport, in São Paulo, causing the suspension of operations at the site. The accident occurred when the Gol aircraft was taking off.

Infraero issued a note informing about the accident and confirming the impacts caused. According to the agency, 16 flights were canceled and 9 diverted to other airports.

“When giving power to the engine at the time of takeoff bound for Santos Dumont Airport, the turbine disintegrated, generating a large amount of material on the runway. Firefighters were called and a thorough cleaning was necessary to ensure the resumption of operations. The suspension caused impacts on the operation,” says the statement.

In a note, Gol said that the aircraft’s crew complied with the procedures provided and is in contact with customers to minimize impacts.

“To minimize the impacts on Customers, the Company is offering accommodation on the next flights. GOL reinforces that all procedures were carried out with a focus on Safety, the number 1 value of the Company”.

Latam also issued a statement informing the resumption of operations.

“LATAM informs that it has already resumed operating flights to and from Congonhas after the reopening of operations at the São Paulo airport this Saturday morning (11/26). The company reiterates that safety is an essential value and that all its actions aim to guarantee a safe operation”.
