AirPods sales begin to fall for the first time, AirPods 3 postponed to the end of the year

The third-generation AirPods will not begin mass production until the third quarter of 2021, according to renowned analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who has made a name for himself on accurate predictions about Apple technology.

If mass production starts only in the third quarter, then the headphones should go on sale in the fall. Earlier it was reported that AirPods 3 will be released in the first half of 2021. Some sources even claimed that the new product could hit the market in March this year.

Kuo expects AirPods’ shipments from Q1 to Q3 2021 to decline by about 25% year on year to 55 million units. If demand for AirPods 3 turns out to be higher than expected, AirPods shipments in the fourth quarter will remain unchanged from last year at 23 million units. Overall, AirPods shipments in 2021 will drop to 78 million units, down from 90 million in 2020.

It is currently unclear if the AirPods 2 will end after the new model is released. Apple has a choice: if the AirPods 2 stay on the market and sell for a lower price, it could negatively impact sales of AirPods 3. At the same time, the lack of a low-cost AirPods model could also have a negative effect.

Kuo attributes the decline in AirPods shipments to increased competition. There are already a lot of inexpensive fully wireless headphones on the market. To improve sales of AirPods, the company needs to innovate in hardware.
