The Federal Audit Court (TCU) this week approved the auction for the concession of 15 airports, including Congonhas Airport, in São Paulo. The government forecast is to attract around R$ 7.3 billion in investments.
With the approval of the TCU, the Ministry of Infrastructure expects the auction to take place later this year, between the first and second week of August. The privatization notice should be published this June.
The auction will run in three blocks. The first of them will be the one that will integrate the most assets, including Congonhas and 10 other airports.
Therefore, the company that buys Congonhas will also be responsible for the administration of another 10 airfields. They are: Campo Grande, Corumbá and Ponta Porã, in Mato Grosso do Sul, Santarém, Marabá, Carajás and Altamira, in Pará, and Uberlândia, Uberaba and Montes Claros, in Minas Gerais.
The second block includes terminals for small aircraft, such as Campo de Marte, in São Paulo, and Jacarepaguá, in Rio de Janeiro.
Finally, in the third block, two airports will be offered in capitals in the North region of the country, in Belém (PA) and Macapá (AP).

Initially, in this concession, the bidding for Santos Dumont Airport, in Rio de Janeiro, was also planned, but the process is still under debate and the plans have been postponed.
Santos Dumont should be offered in a joint auction with Tom Jobim International Airport, Galeão, in the second half of 2023. The company that wins the concession will be responsible for managing the two assets.
The economics analyst CNN Priscila Yazbek spoke to some experts, who said that the history of privatization of airports optimizes “every square meter” to increase revenue.
“In the medium term, there is a trend that transport capacity in relation to cost may decrease, and have greater efficiency,” said Yazbek.
Among the examples cited by experts are the possibility of faster check-in and more flights at airports.
“However, the history also brings a lack of oversight by the agencies that regulate the services of privatized airports”, he added.
One of the fears of specialists is that the increase in efficiency will be accompanied by an increase in the price of air tickets and the fees charged for other services provided.
“The role of regulatory agencies is very important in this regard. Sometimes, a failed inspection instead of providing access to more people can make the service more expensive and, therefore, less accessible to some people”, concluded Yazbek.
