There are “no life-threatening situations” following the 4.8 magnitude earthquake felt in New York, Governor Kathy Hochul said at a news conference.
Even so, the governor asked emergency teams across the state to be “on alert” in the face of reports of dangerous situations.
Hochul added that teams will review “all potentially vulnerable infrastructure” across the state after the earthquake, saying, “this is extremely important after an event like this.”
Both John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York City and Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey came to a standstill after the earthquake shook the northeastern United States on Friday, the governor said.
A ground stop is an order that slows or stops the flow of aircraft at a given airport.
Flights have now resumed at Newark Liberty International Airport, officials said.
The air traffic control tower was evacuated and controllers were moved to a nearby location. This evacuation and Port Authority runway inspections caused flights to be held for a short period earlier in the day.
Hochul said Amtrak, the railroad company with rail service throughout the Northeast, and the MTA, which runs New York City's public transportation including the subway system, were both without “any disruption at this time.”
Amtrak has previously said it has initiated some speed restrictions while it inspects its tracks.
Meanwhile, New Jersey Transit reported some outages.
Hochul said his government is taking the earthquake “very seriously.” “This is because there is always the possibility of aftershocks.”
The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey said it “felt strong vibrations” following the 4.8 magnitude earthquake and warned of possible aftershocks.
“Aftershocks may be felt throughout the rest of today,” the Port Authority said in a statement.
