Turkey is working closely with Russia and Ukraine to reach an agreement on a plan to resume grain exports from Ukrainian ports, even if conflicts erupt in other parts of the country, Turkish Defense Minister Hulusi Akar said.
The ongoing UN-led plan will open a safe shipping corridor to address the global food crisis triggered by the Russian invasion, which has resulted in, inter alia, a halt to grain exports from Ukraine.
Akar said the four sides were working on a plan to clear the port of Odessa – as well as other parts of the Ukrainian coast – of landmines. Discussions focus on who will undertake this project as well as who will guarantee the open shipping corridor.
“We are making efforts to complete the project as soon as possible,” Akar told reporters late Monday night.
“Much progress has been made on this issue,” and technical planning continues, he added.
Turkey has said it is ready to play a role in an “observation mechanism” if an agreement is reached.
Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoλουlu will meet with his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov on Wednesday to discuss the drafting of the plan.
