Akar: Negotiations next week in the US on the F-16 purchase

A Turkish delegation will travel next Monday to the US for new negotiations regarding the purchase of F-16 fighter jets, the Turkish Defense Minister announced today.

“Talks on the acquisition of F-16s are continuing. (…) We have a meeting on August 15: we have been invited to the United States,” Hulusi Akar said during a conference in Ankara without specifying who made the invitation.

He added, however, that he continues to reject the conditions set by the American Congress for the sale of these aircraft to Turkey: the American lawmakers demand that Ankara refrain from any threat against Greece and especially not to violate the airspace her.

“We cannot accept these terms. We hope they will be removed by the Senate,” Akar added.

Agence France-Presse notes that Turkey wants to acquire 40 F-16 fighter planes, as well as spare parts necessary for the maintenance and modernization of the F-16s it already has.

According to the same source, US President Joe Biden said he supports the delivery of F-16s to Turkey during his meeting with his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan on the sidelines of the NATO summit in June in Madrid.

“Mr. Biden’s approach was very positive in Madrid,” Akar recalled.
