Turkish Defense Minister Hulusi Akar told his Russian counterpart Sergei Shoigu during a telephone conversation today that there should be an immediate ceasefire in Ukraine for humanitarian reasons, the Turkish Defense Ministry said.
Turkey, a NATO ally bordering Russia and Ukraine on the Black Sea, has good relations with both countries. Yesterday, Monday, Turkey urged all countries not to cross its Straits to the Black Sea in accordance with the 1936 Montreux Treaty, restricting the passage of some Russian warships.
Ankara has the right under the treaty to restrict passage through the Bosphorus and Dardanelles Straits during a period of war.
Its treaty allows it to restrict Russian warships heading to the Black Sea, while excluding ships returning to their bases. At least four Russian ships are waiting to cross the Mediterranean into the Bosphorus.
During their telephone conversation, Akar told Soigu that Turkey would continue its efforts for peace in the region and humanitarian aid missions.
