Akar talks about co-exploitation of the Aegean and says that he had a positive response from the Greek side – Athens denies

LAST UPDATE: 14:07

Turkish National Defense Minister Hulusi Akar met with journalists after the Extraordinary Summit of NATO Defense Ministers. According to the Hürriyet newspaper, when asked about the latest situation in Greek-Turkish relations, Akar said: “We are conducting our talks in an honest, open and transparent manner.”

Recalling that the first and third meetings of the Confidence Building Measures between the two countries’ Ministries of Defense were held in Athens and the second was held in Turkey, Akar said: “Now it is Turkey’s turn for the fourth meeting.”

Minister Akar stated that they are waiting for the Greek delegation in Ankara for Confidence Building Measures and that this issue came to the fore in his meeting with the Greek Minister of Defense Nikos Panayotopoulos:

“This is important in terms of the well-being of the people of the two countries and the sharing of the beauties and wealth of the Aegean. There is tourism, fishing and a lot of other wealth. We are in favor of sharing them together, we said that. We received a positive response. “In this sense, we expect them to move in that direction. We are constructive, positive, this is our approach,” Akar told Hürriyet.

Stating that the events in Ukraine have brought about a radical change in the security of the region, Minister Akar said: “As NATO, we need to think very carefully about what we need to do in the short, medium and long term in order to maintain deterrence and defense and seize opportunities. “The response to this is bilateral, and it is sought after by all countries and NATO in the general talks.”

Akar’s statements come a day after meeting he had with Nikos Panagiotopoulos.

Athens denies it

Government sources refute the claim of the Turkish Minister of Defense Hulusi Akar about co-exploitation of the Aegean and a positive response from the Greek side and emphasize that the only discussion that has taken place concerns the field of the Confidence Building Measure. Any other discussion regarding the development of an established process between the technical committees in which service bodies participate, the same sources emphasize.
