Akar threatened the Russian Defense Minister in view of the attack in Syria

Turkish Defense Minister Hulusi Akar told his Russian counterpart Sergei Shoigu today by telephone that the two leaders would respond to moves aimed at destabilizing northern Syria, the Turkish Foreign Ministry said in a statement. Ankara is preparing for talks with Moscow ahead of a military strike in the region that Turkey is threatening to launch.

“On the initiative of the Turkish side, on June 7, 2022, telephone conversations took place between the Minister of Defense of the Russian Federation Sergey Shoigu and the Minister of National Defense of the Republic of Turkey Hulusi Akar,” the ministry said.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced two weeks ago that Turkey would soon launch new military operations in northern Syria against the Kurdish militia YPG, which Ankara considers a terrorist organization. The Russian and Turkish Foreign Ministers will hold talks in Ankara later today.

“The necessary response will be given to actions aimed at disrupting the stability achieved in the region and the presence of terrorists in the region is not acceptable,” Akar said in a statement, adding that Akar “He also reminded that the previous agreements on this issue must be respected.”

For its part, the Russian Defense Ministry simply commented that Shoigu had a telephone conversation with Akar about the safety of navigation in the Black Sea in connection with resolving the problem of grain exports from the territory of Ukraine.
