The works for the upgrade of the Port of Igoumenitsa by the contractor company “AKTOR A.T.E. – TOMI A.V.E.T.E. Joint Stock” continue, with a budget of €73.7 million for the functional completion of the development plan to the standards of the Trans-European Transport Networks, which is expected to be delivered in 2023.
The project of New Port of Igoumenitsa was visited by the Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis accompanied by the Deputy Minister of Infrastructure, Mr. Giorgos Karagiannis, the Minister of Shipping and Insular Policy, Mr. Yiannis Plakiotakis and the Secretary General of Insular Policy, Mr. Vangelis Kyriazopoulos.
During his visit, the Prime Minister expressed his satisfaction with the progress of the project, stating “I am particularly happy because the investments have progressed at great speed and are now being completed – as I was informed – within the next year for a complete port, commercial and passenger, as we had committed Igoumenitsa is the second largest port, we will make it even bigger, even better, for the benefit not only of the local community but of all of northern Greece”.
For his part, the Deputy Minister of Infrastructure, Mr. Karagiannis noted: “In 2023, Igoumenitsa will have a port that will allow further commercial development as it belongs to the category of Ports of International Interest. Together with the port of Patras, after all, they constitute the two Greece’s main sea gateways to Western Europe. For this reason, it was imperative to unblock the processes and move swiftly to complete its upgrade. It took political will, a coherent plan and close supervision, as in all projects of infrastructure that we are implementing, to give the wider region another strong pole of development that will bring new jobs. Suffice it to say that the benefits of the new port do not only concern the city of Igoumenitsa but also Regions such as that of Epirus and Western Macedonia which record high unemployment”.
The Igoumenitsa Port project includes port works for the construction and protection of three new berths and moorings, the necessary building works (Gate, substation and water tank) as well as works in the surrounding area including road construction and storm water drainage works.
Today, the works of the port project have been completed and the shaping works of the onshore part of the Port and all of the Road Construction projects of the E.O. and the rest of its support work, E/M work and other OKO network work.
With the completion of the project, the improvement of the level of services provided to all users, the increase of serviced itineraries on an annual basis from the New Port, the safe movement of passengers and goods, the facilitation of location and control of the basic functions of the port will be achieved and the possibility of further development and adaptation of the New Port in accordance with the new requirements set by the European Transport Policy.
The new Port of Igoumenitsa is being developed according to the standards of the Trans-European Transport Networks and with its functional integration it is going to strengthen its position in the international and European environment.
