Al Jazeera journalist dies during coverage of West Bank clash

Al Jazeera journalist Shireen Abu Akleh died on Wednesday (11) after being shot in a clash in the West Bank. The information was released by the Palestinian Ministry of Health and confirmed by the newspaper.

According to other Al Jazeera journalists, Shireen was hit on the head by Israeli forces attacking Jenin, the third largest city in the West Bank. The reporter was taken to hospital in critical condition and did not survive her injuries.

“Shireen Abu Akleh was covering events in Jenin, specifically an Israeli invasion of the city in the northern West Bank, when she was hit by a bullet in the head,” said Al Jazeera journalist Nida Ibrahim. “As you can imagine, this is a shock to the journalists who worked with her.”

Emotional Ibrahim said Shireen was a “very respected journalist” who had worked at the paper since the Second Palestinian Intifada in 2000.

Another journalist, Ali Samoudi, who works for the Palestinian newspaper Quds, was also shot but is in stable condition, the Palestinian Ministry of Health said.

“In recent hours, IDF (Israel Defense Forces) and Israeli security forces have conducted counter-terrorist activity to detain suspected terrorists at the Jenin Refugee Camp,” the Israel Defense Forces reported on social media.

“During the activity, dozens of Palestinian snipers fired and threw explosive devices at the soldiers, who responded with shots in the direction of the snipers. IDF is investigating the event and the possibility that journalists were shot by Palestinian snipers,” the Israeli Forces wrote.

The head of AL Jazeera’s Ramallah office, Walid al-Omary, said there was no shooting by Palestinians.
