A doctor at Al Shifa Hospitalthe largest in the Gaza Strip, told Reuters today that gunfire outside the hospital forced its staff to stay away from the windows for security reasons after an Israeli raid.
Israeli forces claim they are pounding the facility because Hamas has a command post underneath and uses underground tunnels to hold hostages there, a claim denied by Dr Ahmed el Mohalalati.
In the northern part of the Gaza Strip there is now only one hospital still accepting patients due to clashes between Israel and Hamas and a lack of fuel, the UN said overnight.
The al-Ahli hospital in Gaza City is still operating but at minimum capacity, the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (Ocha) said.
Ocha added that all remaining hospitals in the northern part of the Palestinian enclave have stopped functioning due to lack of electricity, medical supplies, oxygen, water and food.
The situation is exacerbated by shelling and clashes in the region, the UN agency said. There are currently 500 patients in Al Ahli Hospital.
The situation in hospitals across the Gaza Strip, which were already stretched to their limits, has deteriorated dramatically in recent days. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), 22 of the enclave’s 36 hospitals have stopped working.
The remaining 14 are barely able to care for patients, including those in intensive care, the WHO said.
