Al. Tsipras: 2.5 euro petrol, 11% inflation and a non-monthly pension cannot continue

The deadlocks from the explosive dimensions of accuracy in fuel, electricity bills and market were discussed with the President of SYRIZA Progressive Alliance, Alexis Tsipras, shopkeepers and consumers in Mytilene during his tour of the city market. During his tour, Mr. Tsipras spoke to the public and took many photos with citizens and students.

“PPC and demons are fighting us” noted a trader to the President of SYRIZA, talking about a big drop in turnover due to the reduction of the purchasing power of the citizens to be precise.

“Every week a business closes. We try to stand on our own two feet but bills, increases do not let us. And we are on the border do not forget it” stressed a restaurant owner, explaining that despite the accumulated debts they try to absorb the successive increases of products to keep prices low, “but new debts are accumulating”.

Many professionals pointed out in their discussions with Mr. Tsipras that the island does not expect much revenue from tourism, while many stressed the impact on the local economy from the reduction in the number of students. As they explained, in addition to the fact that they increased demand, they also offered work, with the result that these hands are now missing from the labor market.

“Summer is coming out. What will happen from September?” asked a family business owner.

Earlier, the president of SYRIZA had visited a gas station, where the owner described the anger of the citizens for the price spike. For his part, Mr. Tsipras noted that “the crucial issue is that if the increase in fuel prices continues in combination with the sharp rise in energy prices, inflation will go up and will create conditions of overall pressure on the economy.” .

After his tour of the Mytilene market, Mr. Tsipras made the following statement to the press:

“Unfortunately the market situation is deteriorating. Especially in areas that do not expect things to change drastically from tourism, the situation is even more difficult.

Today in Mytilene I spoke with people in the market and I found here, as everywhere, the same despair and the same sadness in relation to the economic reality they are experiencing.

It is therefore necessary to take measures because we will be led to conditions of social tension, social crisis and social explosion. When petrol has climbed to 2.5 euros, when inflation is running at 11% and when income is shrinking, when the pension is not enough to go out in the third week of the month, we can not assume that this can go on for long without to have consequences.

It is necessary even now to see the reduction of the Excise Tax on fuel. The government says that amount is around 1.4 billion for the whole year, but six months have already passed. Even now, by the end of the year with 700 million the Budget will not come out. The average citizen, who is suffering unbearably, must be able to breathe, so that the economy can move.

Reduce VAT on basic food and consumption items. It will not take us out of the budget more than the waste, the direct assignments, the closed tenders, the purchases of armament programs without a plan that are announced and without KYSEA being aware.

We must support society. “We have to support small and medium-sized enterprises, each household individually, so that society can stand on its own two feet.”
