A mother and her child were killed by a tornado, one of dozens that hit the Alabamaalso causing significant property damage and power outages.
The 39-year-old mother and her 8-year-old son found death when a huge tree fell on the family’s house in the community of Flatwood, located north of Montgomery – the capital of the state of Alabama.
It was around 3:30 a.m. (local time) and residents reported hearing the sirens about two minutes before the tornado. The victims “were out of luck,” a local official said.

The tornado was one of about 30 reported in Mississippi and Alabama, where 20,000 homes and businesses have been left without electricity.
Severe storms are on the move early this Wednesday.
The biggest threat for isolated severe storms that could bring winds of at least 57 mph, hail, and a tornado or two will be for Florida’s Panhandle and southwestern Georgia.

Montgomery County is one of the hardest hit areas. “We’re going door-to-door and we’ll continue to do that until we’re sure all the residents are OK. This is our highest priority”Sheriff Derrick Cunningham said.

In the central and southern American states, tornadoes are a frequent phenomenon. In December 2021, about 80 people died when tornadoes leveled parts of Kentucky.
A possible tornado was spotted at 2:53 local time just west of Jackson, Alabama.
