A 61-year-old man from Alabama he was arrested after failing to report that he was alive “for days’ with one deceased relative at his home, according to investigators. Officers with the Walker County Sheriff’s Office responded June 9 to a home in the small town of Sipsey, located 32 miles northwest of Birmingham, following a report of a family member found deadthe sheriff’s office said in a Facebook post Wednesday.
Leandrew Smith Jr. charged with abuse of a corpse and taken to the county jail. They discovered Smith had been living there without notifying authorities that his relative had died, according to the post. It’s unclear if Smith has legal representation or how long the person had been dead at the home, reports the CNN.
“Treating a human corpse in a manner that would outrage ordinary family sensibilities is felony category C,” said the sheriff’s office’s Facebook post. Investigators are looking into the person’s cause and manner of death, according to the post.
