The second episode of the special series produced by CNN“Projeto Educação Que Dá Certo”, reveals that partnerships created for the specialization of teachers contributed to better results in the schools of Coruripe, in the interior of Alagoas.
In 2013, the city had an Ideb (Basic Education Development Index) very close to the Brazilian average. In the following years, the difference increased more and more, and Coruripe currently occupies the first place among the municipalities with a population of more than 50 thousand inhabitants.
Heline Mariane, director of the Escola de Educação Básica Vereador José Wilson, which has the best Ideb in the early years in Brazil, says that there is no secret or “a ready formula” to achieve the results obtained in the city.
One of the main points to reach this qualified level of education was to try to give equal importance to rural and urban areas.
Maria Marques, former manager of the administration of the Municipal Department, participated in the educational transformation in Coruripe.
For her, “everyone belongs to the municipality and everyone has the right to learn”. The requirement, collection and monitoring, according to the manager, were the same in all municipal schools.
Half of the city’s population lives on very little – an income of up to half the minimum wage. The municipal education network is composed of 20 schools, being considered medium-sized by Brazilian standards.
“I feel a very big responsibility to maintain this quality. I lie down with the feeling that duty is being done. There’s still a lot to do, but it won’t take long for us to do it”, emphasizes the director.
Student Ana Cristina says she hopes that education can open doors to the future.
“What the professional can do is believe in his student, and that’s what the teachers used to say, saying: you can do it, you can do it.”
