Alagoas has 18,000 homeless people due to heavy rains

In addition to Pernambuco, the state of Alagoas has also been hit hard by the rains. According to Lieutenant Colonel Moisés Melo, who is the general coordinator of Civil Defense in the state, 18,000 people are homeless or displaced and 4 have died.

“We have a forecast of rain until Sunday, probably, with strong blows”, he said, in an interview with CNN Radio .

He stated that the soil becomes soggy from 100 millimeters of rain, and the level has already exceeded 300 millimeters. “This brings more risk to the population residing in the hillside areas in the municipalities, the municipal civil defenses are oriented to remove the population from risk areas.”

So far, there are 35 municipalities in Alagoas in an emergency situation.

“It is the responsibility of the municipality to take the first step, because it knows where there is a risk, where it floods, there is a risk of landslides, it needs to activate the contingency plan and activate all the competent bodies.”

The entire coastal strip, the forest area and the capital Maceió were affected, but the lieutenant colonel points out that it was not necessary to use forces from other states so far.

According to him, once the rain stops, “in up to a month the municipalities will be ready to resume normality”.
