Alarm bell from the US – They warn of famine in parts of Gaza

Famine conditions in parts of the Gaza Strip are considered by the head of the US Agency for International Development (USAID) to already exist in the region, ringing the alarm bell. At a hearing by the US House Foreign Affairs Committee on Wednesday, Samantha Power was asked if that assessment applied particularly to the northern part of the besieged Palestinian enclave. The answer he gave was “yes”. According to US media, this positive response makes Power the first representative of the US government to publicly confirm this assessment. A state of famine is considered to exist when at least 20% of the population is affected by extreme food shortages.
