Alarm in Europe: Sperm Donor with carcinogenic mutation used to arrest 67 children – 10 developed cancer

A man who brought a rare genetic mutation, associated with a high risk of cancer, was used as a sperm donor to conceive of at least 67 children, of which 10 have been diagnosed with cancer so far. According to the Guardian, the case, which came to light through presentations at a European Genetics Conference in Milan, raises new concerns about the uncontrolled use of sperm samples by individual donors internationally. French biologist Dr. Edwige Kasper, from Rouen University Hospital, noted that “a European border on the number of births or families per donor must be introduced”. As he pointed out, “we cannot seize the whole genome for each donor – this is not the question. But this case is an abnormal dispersion of genetic disease.
