Alaska Earthquake: Tsunami warnings have arrived

Ήρθησαν Alaska and Pacific tsunami warnings after 8.2 magnitude earthquake which occurred in the seismogenic US state late yesterday (local time).

The US Geological Survey (USGS) said the quake, which struck at 10:15 p.m. local time yesterday (09.15 am Greek time today), had a focal depth of 35 km. Its epicenter was about 90 miles[91km]southeast of Perville, about 4 miles[800 km]from Anchorage, Alaska’s largest city.

The U.S. National Tsunami Warning Center (NTWC) had issued a warning for southern Alaska and the Alaska Peninsula before raising the alarm a few hours later.

In Tsunami, Old Harbor, King Cove, Kodiak, Yunalaska and Alitak Bay, small tsunami waves were reported to be less than 30 million feet above sea level, according to the NTWC.

There were no immediate reports of injuries or damage. Several communities off the coast of Alaska were evacuated after the quake. In Kodiak, an island of about 6,000 people, tsunami warnings sounded and residents near the sea were ordered to leave their homes.

“It is the strongest earthquake in Alaska since 1965,” Michael West, a seismologist at the Alaska Seismological Center, told Alaska Public Media.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center (PTWC) canceled its warnings for Hawaii and Guam, and the state-run NHK said there was no danger to Japan. Authorities in New Zealand have also said they do not expect flooding in coastal areas.
