Albania: Data of thousands of citizens leaked on the Internet – The president and the prime minister among them

Albanian prosecutors have launched a preliminary investigation into the leak and posting on social media sites of personal data of thousands of citizens, including the country’s prime minister and president, according to a French Agency journalist who saw the lists.

The widely circulated data includes the names of individuals, their employers, their salary and their telephone number.

According to Albanian media, an estimated 700,000 people have fallen victim to the leak. These include bank employees, business executives, civil servants, members of the intelligence and military services, and journalists.

Prime Minister Eddie Rama and President Ilir Meta are also among those whose personal details have been circulating on WhatsApp and other social networking sites since Wednesday.

“Prosecutors have launched an investigation,” the Tirana prosecutor’s office said.

Media outlets reported that the servers of many services, such as the tax office and insurance funds, were confiscated as part of the investigation.

The prime minister assured that it was not a “cyber attack” and that the leak was organized from inside, by people who had access to the databases. He also promised that the case would be thoroughly investigated. “The goal was to confuse and hurt stability,” he said.

This is the second time in a few months that massive personal data has been leaked to Albania. In April, before the parliamentary elections, the data of about one million citizens were circulated in the media. So far no charges have been filed in this case.
