Albanian Court Approves Extradition of Fugitive Founder of Thodex Crypto Exchange to Turkey

Turkey has extradited the founder of the Thodex cryptocurrency exchange, Faruk Fatih Ozer, who fled to Albania in 2021 with clients’ money.

An Albanian court has ordered the extradition of Thodex founder Faruk Fatih Özer to Turkey. Recall that a fugitive businessman who stole more than $100 million from depositors was arrested this summer in Albania on charges of fraud and running a criminal organization.

In April 2021, Turkey issued an international arrest warrant for the businessman. Interpol was looking for him for “red notice” fraud, which involves asking law enforcement agencies around the world to locate and pre-arrest a criminal for his subsequent extradition.

It is noteworthy that at the time the investigation began, the founder of Thodex did not hide his whereabouts. He said he left Turkey to meet with foreign investors in Albania and plans to return to the country within “several days” to cooperate with the authorities.

On the basis of the accusations, the former head of the Thodex exchange faces a life sentence.
