Albania’s population has declined – What the latest census figures show

The results of the last national census of Albania were announced yesterday and the data showed a decrease in the population with the number reaching 2,402,113 citizens which compared to 2011 is less by 419,831. “The population of permanent residents of the Republic of Albania on September 18, 2023 amounted to 2,402,113 people, or recorded a decrease of about 420,000 people compared to the 2011 census,” summarizes the report compiled by the Albanian statistical institute (INSTAT) . Demographic decline is “a continuous trend since the 1990s, mainly due to immigration,” according to INSTAT’s assessment. Before the 1990s and the fall of Ember Hoxha’s socialist regime, one of the most hermetically sealed in the world, Albania recorded continuous demographic growth. But in the period that followed, marked by an unprecedented economic crisis in 1997, falling birthrates and mass emigration, and to this day, Albania sees an average of 50,000 people leave. […]
