Two Canadian provinces put it on the ice AstraZeneca vaccine, for different reasons each.
Alberta and Ontario announced yesterday, Tuesday, that they will stop offering first doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine against COVID-19, with Ontario citing evidence that the risk of rare blood clots forming is slightly higher than previously thought.
Alberta said it took the same measure only because the timing of receiving new batches of the vaccine was unclear and not because of concerns about side effects.
Officials in Ontario said about one in 60,000 people who received the vaccine in the province, a total of eight people, presented the complication, as broadcast by AMPE.
Regulators and teams of experts in Canada, in Australia, the United Kingdom and Europe, had previously estimated that the risk ranged from one in 95,000 to one in 130,000 vaccinations.
“We still believe that those who received the first dose of the AstraZeneca vaccine did the right thing in preventing the disease and protecting their families, loved ones and communities,” said David Williams, Ontario Health Officer.
