Former Peruvian President Alberto Fujimori has died aged 86, his daughter Keiko said in a post on X on Wednesday (11).
“After a long battle with cancer, our father, Alberto Fujimori, has just passed away to meet the Lord. We ask that those who loved him join us in praying for the eternal rest of his soul. Thank you for so much, father. Keiko, Hiro, Sachie and Kenji Fujimori,” wrote the former president’s daughter.
Fujimori, who was sentenced to 25 years for human rights crimes and corruption, had been battling heart problems.
In May of this year, the Peruvian revealed that he had been diagnosed with a malignant tumor on his tongue, where he has had a cancerous lesion for more than 27 years.
Released since December
The former Peruvian president was released in December last year while serving a 25-year sentence for human rights violations.
He was convicted in 2009 of ordering the massacre of 25 people in 1991 and 1992, when his government was fighting the Shining Path.
But he was pardoned on Christmas Eve 2017 by the president at the time, Pedro Pablo Kuczynski. Alberto Fujimori was free for about nine months before a court declared the pardon null and void.
Since then, the pardon has been repeatedly overturned or suspended by lower courts following pressure from the Inter-American Court and victims’ families.
