Alcatraz’s only survivor describes life in the infamous prison – Al Capone and escape attempts

Charlie Hopkins, today, 93, and a resident of Florida, remembers most of all the “dead silence” prevailing in the infamous Alcatraz prison, where he spent three years of his life. In 1955 Hopkins was transferred to Alcatraz, the renowned prison on a secluded island off San Francisco, to serve a 17 -year -old penalty for abduction and robbery after causing problems in other prisons. As he fell asleep in his cell at night, all he was listening to was the whistle of the passes. “This is a lonely sound,” he said. “It reminds you of Hank Williams singing ‘I’m so lonesome i Could Cry’,” he says. Recently, San Francisco’s national archives informed him that he was probably the last survivor of a former Alcatraz prisoner. Another former prisoner, William Baker, seemed to be alive until last year.
