Alec Baldwin on “Rust” Set Tragedy: “Hardest Thing I’ve Faced”

Actor Alec Baldwin, 66, said the tragedy on the set of the film “Rust” was the biggest challenge of his life. Production of the western was interrupted in October 2021, when a scenic gun handled by the Hollywood star accidentally went off, causing the death of director of photography Halyna Hutchins and injuring the film’s director, Joel Souza.

Baldwin was indicted for manslaughter, but the case was filed in July this year, after the Public Prosecutor’s Office failed to present evidence that would be essential to continue the case.

“Obviously, this is the hardest thing I’ve ever faced in my life. Besides the victims themselves, what hurts me most is the impact of this on my wife. We have dealt with a lot of suffering. We’re trying to use the wind to our advantage, get away from these things. Because the film doesn’t stand on its own. He will always be overshadowed by this”, declared the artist in an interview with Variety.

Despite not having seen the final version of the film, Alec hopes the film will be released. “No, I haven’t seen the final version. I received a preliminary version at the beginning, before everything became more complicated and difficult. So, I didn’t watch the film”, he explained.

The actor added that it is important for the project’s investors to recover their resources and cited Matt Hutchins, Halyna’s widower, as part of the commitment made by the team.

“You never want people who believed in your project to be left watching ships. And I hope the film sells and that he [Matt Hutchins, marido de Halyna] receive your money. We all made an agreement with him and we want to fulfill it”, he declared.

Alec revealed that he is focused on putting the episode behind him and dedicating his energy to his family. “At this age, I’m 66, you want to have energy for your children. The last two years of this situation have simply worn me down, drained me. I have an obligation like any other man who is a father, or couples of fathers — two men who have children, whatever the case may be — we have an obligation to dedicate the best of ourselves to our children. And that’s been the hardest part for me.”
