Alec Baldwin reaches agreement with Halyna Hutchins’ family

The family of Halyna Hutchins, the cinematographer killed in the film “Rust” set in 2021, and Alec Baldwin reached an undisclosed settlement in the wrongful death lawsuit brought against the actor and others, according to a statement released by Baldwin’s attorney.

The lawsuit, filed in February in Santa Fe, against Baldwin, the film’s producers, its producers and other key staff members, alleged numerous violations of industry standards.

Also according to the statement, Matthew Hutchins, the widower of Halyna Hutchins who was killed on set, will executive produce the film and receive a cut of the proceeds.

“We have reached an agreement, subject to court approval, for our wrongful death case against the producers of Rust, including Alec Baldwin and Rust Movie Productions, LLC. As part of this settlement, our case will be dropped,” Hutchins said in a statement.

“Filming on Rust, which I will now executive produce, will resume with all the original lead actors on board in January 2023. I have no interest in getting involved in recriminations or attribution of blame (to the producers or Mr. Baldwin). We all believe that Halyna’s death was a terrible accident. I am grateful that the producers and entertainment community came together to pay tribute to Halyna’s final work,” he added.

“Throughout this difficult process, everyone has maintained a specific desire to do what is best for Halyna’s son. We are grateful to everyone who contributed to the resolution of this tragic and painful situation,” said Alec Baldwin’s attorney Luke Nikas de Quinn Emanuel.

Film director Joel Souza, who was also wounded in the shooting, is expected to return to the film. “Those of us who were lucky enough to have spent time with Halyna knew that she was extremely talented, kind, creative and a source of incredible positive energy. I just wish the world got to know her under different circumstances, as it certainly would have through her amazing work. In my own attempts at healing, any decision to come back to finish directing the film would only make sense to me if it was made with the involvement of Matt and the Hutchins family. While certainly bittersweet, I’m pleased that together, we’ll now complete what Halyna and I started. All my efforts on this film will be dedicated to honoring Halyna’s legacy and making her proud. It is a privilege to see this on her behalf,” Souza said in the statement.

Rust Movie Productions, LLC, Spadone Attorney of Pillsbury Winthrop Shaw Pittman, said: “We are pleased that the parties have joined together to resolve this matter, which, subject to court approval, marks an important step towards celebrating the life of Halyna and honoring her job.”

The suit also alleged that the producers and producers “cut costs” and “chose to hire the cheapest staff available”, noting specifically that they “knowingly hired a totally unskilled gunsmith” and demanded that she split her time into a second role as an assistant. of props. teacher.
