Alerj approves decree preventing expansion works at Santos Dumont airport

The Legislative Assembly of the state of Rio de Janeiro (Alerj) approved, this Thursday (16), a legislative decree canceling the environmental license to expand the runways at Santos Dumont airport.

The project, authored by the president of the House himself, André Ceciliano, argues that this type of construction is prohibited by both the Federal Constitution and state law 1,700/90.

According to Alerj itself, the removal of the license is a strategy for the Santos Dumont concession model to be reassessed so that the Galeão international airport is not emptied.

“I’m not against Santos Dumont’s concession, but the way it’s being conducted, it will break Galeão. And we are going to have a closed international airport, which is nonsense”, said Ceciliano in plenary, during the vote on the bill.

On Wednesday (15), Governor Claudio Castro stated that he already sees a change in the position of the Ministry of Infrastructure in relation to the airport’s concession model.

The folder’s secretary of aviation, Ronei Glanzmann, confirmed to CNN that the federal government “likes” the idea of sending to the National Congress a Provisional Measure whose objective is to separate the value of the concession of the National Civil Aviation Fund from the national treasury.

In this way, it will be possible to revert this amount to the construction of a modal that allows the connection between the Santos Dumont and Galeão terminals.

In October of this year, the city of Rio de Janeiro sent an official letter to the National Aviation Agency (ANAC), requesting changes to the invitation to bid. Paes called for a “smooth transition” between the current model and the new one.

The mayor even requested the adoption of some temporary restrictions in Santos Dumont, until the city obtains, for four consecutive years, the movement of 30 million passengers per year, in the two airports together.
