In an interview with CNN this Wednesday (20), the day that marks the end of summer and the beginning of autumn, Desirée Brandt, meteorologist and executive partner at Nottus, warned of strong storms on the coast of São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro this weekend.
“A frontal system forms in the southern region of Brazil and sweeps the south of the country from today (20) to tomorrow (21). As it has been very hot, this should help with the formation of heavy clouds. Until tomorrow (21), this cold front touches São Paulo”, explains Desirée.
For the specialist, the point of attention is the coastal strip of São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. “There is a lot of water to fall. The first rain showers are always the most dangerous, we will see storms, winds and a very significant volume of rain. The Atlantic is also warmer, another fuel for these heavy clouds”, reports the meteorologist.
The National Institute of Meteorology (Inmet) issued warnings of intense rain and storms for much of the country in the coming days. The only region under red alert of intense danger is the north coast of São Paulo, Zona da Mata, in Minas Gerais, the entire state of Rio de Janeiro and the south of Espírito Santo.
The red alert runs from Friday (22) until Sunday (24). The Institute expects rain of more than 100 millimeters per day and winds of more than 100 km/h. Inmet also warns of the risk of damage to buildings, electricity cuts, falling trees, electrical discharges, flooding, floods and major disruptions to road transport.
The change in weather comes shortly after a heat wave that increased thermometer temperatures in much of the country. In recent weeks, temperatures have been at least 5°C above average for more than five consecutive days.
The meteorologist also warns that other parts of the country will also feel this change in the weather. “Friday and the weekend will be very different, a nice refreshment here.”
Starting in the next few weeks, Desirée explains that Brazilians should experience typical autumn days. “The tendency is for the weather to become increasingly dry, this starts in April, mainly in the Southeast, Central-West and interior of the Northeast”. The forecast is for periods of rain during the season, always interspersed with warmer periods.
