Alessandro Zan: “In a high school I had to explain why the senators exulted”

The ddl Zan continues his journey in the squares of Italy. More than fifty demonstrations were born in his favor afterwards the sinking in the Senate and above all in response to the exultation shown in the Senate by politicians opposed to the bill against homotransphobia. The signs that follow one another in the Italian regions almost always shout the same phrases: “Shame”, and “We will not stop”.

And this is where Alessandro Zan starts in his letter sent to Maurizio Molinari, editor of the newspaper Republic, after a meeting with the students of a high school in Oristano. «I had to explain why the senators cheered as in a stadium for the defeat of an anti-discriminatory rule. They wanted to understand, they needed to understand. The Ddl Zan it was more than the umpteenth attempt (the sixth from 1996 to today) to give Italy a law against hate crimes: these two years have been a path of education for democracy for a generation accustomed to perceiving its own distant destiny by the institutions “.

The voices of the Italian squares were also joined by that of Patrick Zaki from prison in Egypt. The student arrested in February 2020 on charges of subversive internet propaganda delivered a message to his family that was posted on social media by campaign activists Patrick free. “It is a slap in the face to those who believe in the progress of human rights.”

On the behavior of Matteo Renzi, Alessandro Zan does not mince words. «The tactics of who, how Matteo Renzi, he supported the law in the House and then challenged it and killed it in the Senate did not just put Italy to shame, but it has also nurtured the chronic disappointment of girls and boys who warn politics as a distant, distant, alien practice. Senator Renzi accuses us of populism, but not everything popular is populist.

Not everything that citizens care about is populist. The truth is that those who said they wanted to mediate actually aimed to erase gender identity, or to exclude trans people from any protection. Our firmness was not to pursue consensus, but to not leave behind one of the most vulnerable and marginalized communities ».

In closing, Alessandro Zan reiterated that the allies with whom Renzi suggested negotiating are the same allies already allied with the Hungarian Prime Minister Orbán. «If Renzi wants to know populism, he can look to Poland or Hungary where Orbán – whose Italian allies are Matteo Salvini e Giorgia Meloni, with whom Renzi suggested dealing – first compressed civil liberties and then democratic ones. Italia Viva asked for mediation with those who have the same ideas as Orbàn, and it is with them that he has chosen to stay. We are grateful to the season that has given us civil unions, we would be equally grateful if they were not remembered every time as a magnanimous concession, as if we had to learn to be satisfied, to stay in our place waiting for the next favorable situation, which could very well arrive in a generation ».
