Alexa is Amazon’s virtual assistant that has revolutionized the world of technology with its online search and assistance services. However, a possible flaw in its configuration has put a 10-year-old girl in danger.
It all happened when Kristin Livdahl and her daughter performed physical exercises following routines on YouTube. At that moment, the little girl asked Alexa to recommend another challenge to complete her exercise routine and the virtual assistant replied that she had found a challenge on the web that consisted of using an electrical outlet and a penny. Her mother realized what happened and the possible accident that could have occurred if she was not there.

Oh, my God! My 10 year old daughter just asked Alexa on our Echo for a challenge and this is what she said:
Give me a challenge to do.
Here is something I found on the web. According to ourcommunitynow.com, the challenge is simple: Plug a phone charger halfway into a wall outlet, then tap the exposed tips with a penny.
Kristin Livdahl shared her unfortunate experience with using Alexa and how she and her daughter dealt with the unexpected situation. Fortunately, the minor did not follow the recommendations of the virtual assistant, as Kristin interrupted her recommendation with a desperate cry: “No, Alexa, no!”
Everything indicates that the response the mother and daughter received was out of context and put the girl in danger. For this reason, Kristin shared her experience in networks and Amazon (the company responsible for Alexa) responded immediately.
After a series of investigations and proposals for improvements, Amazon released an update so that Alexa no longer recommends these types of challenges.
Customer trust is at the core of everything we do and Alexa is designed to deliver accurate, relevant and useful information to customers. As soon as we become aware of this error, we take quick steps to fix it.
To verify this change and / or improvement, various users shared screenshots showing that when making the same request to Alexa, it no longer returned these types of results. This means that the improvement was effective and fast. However, this small mishap reminds us that technology is not always perfect and precise and that we must be in the care of minors to avoid any incident.
