Russia is likely to soon appoint Alexander Dartsyev as its new ambassador to Washington, Kommersant newspaper reported today, citing three unnamed sources. Dartsev is the head of the State Department’s North American division. He studied history at Moscow State University, is fluent in English and French, and was Russia’s ambassador to Ottawa, Canada between 2014-21. His appointment has not been confirmed by official sources. Anatoly Antonov was Russia’s ambassador to Washington from 2017 until last month. Asked about the matter in recent days, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said a candidate had been chosen, but did not name him. An unnamed foreign ministry source told the state-run RIA news agency that the name of the new ambassador was decided some time ago. “It was an open secret for two months. Everyone knew it,” said this source, commenting on the Kommersant article. Source: RES
