Alexander McQueen: Sarah Burton steps down as creative director

It’s official, the Kering group has announced his departure: Sarah Burton leaves the creative direction of the Alexander McQueen fashion house after thirteen years to his guide. The appointment in the French capital will see the swan song this September 30thwith the parade of Spring-Summer 2024 collection, the conclusion of a creative journey that began even more than thirteen years ago, when Sarah Burton took over the artistic reins of the brand after the sad and sudden death of founder Alexander McQueen. «We would like to express our immense gratitude to Sarah for having written such an important chapter in the history of the fashion house – said Gianfilippo Testa, CEO of Alexander McQueen. – Sarah’s contribution over the last twenty-six years will leave an indelible mark.”


Twenty-six years of career and not hearing them: you could say that Sarah Burton has spent just over a quarter of a century within the fashion houseshaping a distinctive and recognizable aesthetic, always respectful of the past and the legacy of its predecessor.

In 2011, after less than a year at the helm of the fashion house, Sarah Burton was Kate Middleton’s choice for the dress for the royal wedding with Prince William: a custom-made creation that has gone down in history as one of the most famous wedding dresses ever. As Buckingham Palace announced, the current Princess of Wales chose the English brand “for the beauty of her savoir-faire, for the respect for traditional artisan tailoring and the technical construction of the clothes”.
