Algeria: 10 years in prison required for “insulting Islam”

The Algerian public prosecutor’s office on Wednesday called for confirmation of the ten-year prison sentence imposed on the militant of the anti-regime protest movement Yacine Mebarki, accused in particular of “desecration” of the Koran and “insulting Islam”. As a reminder, Mr. Mebarki was sentenced on October 8 to ten years’ imprisonment and a heavy fine of 10 million dinars (66,000 euros) by the court in Khenchela (northeast). This is the most severe sentence targeting an activist of the “hirak”, the popular protest movement against power in Algeria born in February 2019, according to the National Committee for the Liberation of Detainees (CNLD), an association supporting prisoners of conscience. The verdict is expected on November 25, the CNLD said. This conviction is part of a wave of repression targeting daily “hirak” activists, political opponents, journalists and bloggers. Nearly 90 people are currently imprisoned in Algeria for acts linked to the “hirak” and / or to individual freedoms. Charges based largely on Facebook posts, according to the CNLD.

Several NGOs, including the Algerian League for the Defense of Human Rights (LADDH) and Amnesty International called in a joint statement for the release of Mr. Mebarki and the abandonment of “baseless lawsuits related to his publications. online and other charges simply arising from the exercise of his freedom of expression and conscience ”. The Algerian authorities “must put an end to criminal investigations and proceedings targeting people who only peacefully express their opinions, including views critical of religious teachings or state officials,” continues the press release.
